Pittsburgh Dialect Study

My current research, under the Pittsburgh Dialect Study, investigates the metalinguistic opinions and linguistic awarenesses of marginalized Pittsburgh residents with respect to the regional English dialect termed ‘Pittsburghese.’

From the spring of 2014 until the spring of 2015, I collected 20 sociolinguistic interviews with non-native Pittsburgh residents who open identify as LGBTQ or otherwise non-cis/het. I hope to use the information they provided to build a view of ‘Pittsburghese’ from the sociocultural margins, utilizing queer and feminist linguistic theory.
